The Katy Guitar Fest to Merge with the West Houston Jazz Festival
Posted: 11/28/2010 12:03 EST

Katy, TX - On April 30, 2011, Cinco Ranch Conservatory of Music will host their second Katy Guitar Fest, as a component of the West Houston Jazz Festival. The West Houston Jazz Festival / Katy Guitar Fest (WHJF / KGF) will be held at Cinco Ranch High School, located at 23440 Cinco Ranch Blvd., and will feature an incredible array of jazz performances, masterclasses, and an outdoor area that will host a variety of vendors, to include arts and crafts.

The WHJF (April 29 and 30, 2011) is hosted by the Katy Independent School District and is in its 3rd year. The purpose for this event is to increase exposure, education, and entertainment of the jazz music medium. The event is designed to benefit participating student jazz groups, individual student musicians, jazz music educators, and to provide top quality jazz performances to the community.

The WHJF is non-competitive in nature and is designed to provide a performance opportunity for all jazz groups and to receive constructive comments / instruction from professional musicians. For the jazz enthusiast, the opportunity to hear student jazz ensemble performances throughout the festival day, hear professional jazz artists teaching their crafts and skills, and then complete the day with attending a professional jazz concert provides unparalleled insight into the development and preservation of this American music art form. This year‟s WHJF will feature The Stan Kenton Alumni Band (celebrating their 100th anniversary).

Running concurrently with the Saturday component of the WHJF will be the Katy Guitar Fest. As the ultimate goal in beginning the KGF was to bring to the greater Katy area a cultural / fine arts event that would cater to the entire family, Dr. Michael Guevara, manager of the Cinco Ranch Conservatory of Music, stated that he was "thrilled beyond measure" when he heard that the KGF had been approved to merge with the WHJF as a component of their event. "With hard work and a little bit of luck," stated Dr. Guevara, "the Katy area will have a wonderful, multi-day music „event‟ that will only grow and, hopefully, become a major draw to the area within the next few years!" To that end, Dr. Guevara commented that he was working towards bringing a solid roster of professional guitarists to the April event.
